TGA Guideline Updates

On 7 March 2024, the Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA), the Australian authority tasked with overseeing and regulating medical treatments and devices, enhanced its guidelines concerning the promotion of cosmetic injectables.

The TGA issued a reminder to healthcare professionals that products such as Anti Wrinkle Injections, Dermal Fillers, and Fat Dissolving Injections fall under Schedule 4 prescription medicines and should not be advertised as part of cosmetic health services. The use of before/after images and listing prices for these treatments are also forbidden. The TGA retains the authority to enforce these rules through legal action and penalties against non-compliant clinics.

Consequently, commonly used descriptions like ‘Wrinkle Reducing Injections’, ‘Anti Wrinkle Injections’, ‘Dermal Fillers’, ‘Lip Fillers’, etc., are disallowed as they could lead consumers to perceive them as an endorsement for the use or procurement of prescription medications.

Currently, the TGA’s position is clearly outlined on its website.

“Either directly or indirectly, you cannot make any reference in your advertisement for cosmetic injection services to prescription-only substances or to product trade names of such products. This includes acronyms, nicknames, abbreviations and hashtags, which may be taken by a consumer as a reference to a specific prescription-only medicine or substance.

This includes:

  • anti-wrinkle injections
  • dermal fillers
  • injectable products used for improvement of the appearance of submental fat.”

Treatable Areas

Pre-Treatment Preparation

Timely Scheduling

Plan your appointment at least 1-2 weeks before a special occasion, like a wedding or vacation, to mitigate the risk of bruising and swelling after the treatment.

Arnica Tablets

Consider taking Arnica tablets one week before your appointment to help prevent and minimise bruising.

Medication Caution

Refrain from using anti-inflammatory/blood-thinning medications, such as Aspirin, Vitamin E, Omega 3/Fish Oil Supplements, Ibuprofen, Advil, and other NSAIDs, 5-7 days before treatment, unless directed by your GP or specialist.

Cold Sore Prevention

If you have a history of cold sores and are getting injectable treatment around the mouth, consider taking antiviral tablets the day before or on the treatment day to reduce the likelihood of developing a cold sore post-treatment. These tablets can be bought over the counter at a pharmacy without a prescription.

Rescheduling for Illness

Reschedule your appointment at least 24 hours in advance if you feel unwell or have an active infection in the treatment area.

Pre-Treatment Precautions

Avoid strenuous physical activity or excessive alcohol intake 24 hours before your treatment, as it heightens the risk of bruising.

Post Treatment Care

Avoid Alcohol and Strenuous Exercise

Avoid rubbing, touching, or massaging the treated area until the next morning. Refrain from facial treatments, lasers, or massages for one week post-treatment.

Minimise Touch

It is advisable not to lie down for 6-8 hours after treatment to prevent inadvertent rubbing of the treated areas.

Makeup Application

Hold off on applying makeup to the treated area for 24 hours post-treatment, unless using Dermaceutic K Ceutic recovery cream, available for purchase in the clinic, is the only foundation safe for use directly after injectable treatment. It is known for accelerating wound healing while concealing signs of treatment.

Refrain from Alcohol and exercise

Refrain from alcohol and strenuous exercise for the next 24 hours.

Avoid

Avoid exposure to heat treatments like sauna, hot tub, or tanning for up to 48 hours post-treatment. Stay away from exfoliating products (scrubs, AHAs, BHAs, Vitamin A) for the next four days.

Medication Considerations

Consider using Paracetamol for headaches or pain. Avoid blood-thinning medicines such as ibuprofen (Nurofen), diclofenac (Voltaren), Aspirin, and omega 3/fish oil for 48 hours post-treatment to minimise the risk of bruising and swelling.

Swelling and Bruising Management

There is a slight risk of bruising. If it occurs, don’t worry; it’s temporary, generally minor, and can be easily covered up with makeup. Arnica tablets and hirudoid/bruise-eze cream can be used to help reduce bruising.

Skin Treatments Postponed

Steer clear of invasive skin treatments for two weeks, including skin needling, lasers, chemical peels, and facial tattooing

Results

Your treatment will take 4-14 days to begin working, with full results visible at two weeks. If, at two weeks, you have any concerns or feel there’s more muscle movement than expected, contact The Aesthetic Co for a follow-up appointment. Adjustments can be made, and additional units may be required at an extra cost. Frequently Asked Questions

HOW SHOULD I PREPARE FOR MY TREATMENT ON THE DAY?

Come to your appointment without makeup. Refrain from engaging in strenuous exercise, consuming alcohol, or smoking on the day of your appointment. If you’re feeling unwell, consider rescheduling. Prior to your appointment, have a meal and stay hydrated to reduce the likelihood of experiencing light-headedness or dizziness during your treatment.

AM I SUITABLE TO RECEIVE THIS TREATMENT?

You may not be eligible for treatment if you are currently pregnant, breastfeeding, or have open sores or active irritation in the treatment area. Additionally, individuals with a history of neuromuscular diseases such as Multiple Sclerosis, Myasthenia Gravis, or Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis might not be suitable candidates. It’s crucial to openly discuss your medical history with your injector during the consultation before your appointment to determine the appropriateness of this treatment for you.

WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF YOUR FINE LINES AND WRINKLE TREATMENT?

Anti-ageing treatments offer a multitude of benefits. They effectively reduce dynamic wrinkles by temporarily relaxing facial muscles, providing a non-surgical and minimally invasive alternative to options like facelifts, which carry more risks and downtime associated with skin ageing.

The procedure is swift, typically taking 15 to 30 minutes, offering a quick and effective solution with noticeable results.

One key advantage is that the results are not permanent, allowing for adjustments in placement or dosage in future treatments if necessary. This flexibility empowers you to decide whether to continue with the treatments in the long run.

WHAT IF I DON’T KNOW WHAT I NEED TREATED?

Nurse Jacintha specialises in comprehensive full-face rejuvenation and is adept at evaluating your facial requirements. Schedule a complimentary consultation with or without treatment on the same day, and begin the journey toward realising your desired results.

WHEN WILL I SEE RESULTS?

Muscle relaxing treatments typically start taking effect within 3-5 days and reach their maximum impact after about 14 days. The results usually last for a few months, gradually diminishing from around 2 months onward. To maintain optimal results, it is recommended to schedule anti-wrinkle injections every 3 months. Without regular treatments, the full effects typically wear off after 4-6 months, depending on the dosage and treated area. The longevity of the injectable product can vary due to factors such as metabolism, diet, exercise, overall health, medications, supplements, and the amount of product used. It’s important to consider these individual differences for a personalised treatment plan.

HOW MUCH PRODUCT DO I NEED?

Everyone’s needs are unique, and the ideal amount of product for the best results depends on factors like volume loss and muscle strength. In our friendly pre-treatment consultation, we’ll chat about your specific requirements, and we’ll also consider lifestyle factors. To achieve the results you’re looking for, it might take a few treatments, making sure we tailor our approach to meet your individual expectations.

HOW DO FROWN LINES DEVELOP?

The emergence of frown lines, commonly triggered by repetitive facial movements in the brow region, can extend to prominent areas like the eyes and forehead. Beyond the natural ageing process, even young adults may develop lines from regular squinting, contributing to the deepening and heightened visibility of wrinkles over time. Muscle relaxing treatments are crafted to alleviate muscle contractions, leading to the reduction of wrinkles while preserving a natural appearance.

WHAT ARE THE COMMON SIDE EFFECTS?

Mild side effects from muscle relaxing treatments are usually manageable with paracetamol, topical agents, or simply allowing them to resolve naturally. Potential side effects may include headaches, slight swelling, redness, minor bruising, tenderness at injection points, and occasional minor bleeding. Some individuals may also experience mild dizziness or nausea. Adhering to aftercare instructions is advised, and if any concerns arise, feel free to reach out to Nurse Jacintha for guidance and support. Your comfort and well-being are our priorities.
